Carlos Filipe Fernandes, sport and performance psychologist

Background

Since 2023 I have worked as an independent consultant, following a career that included HighPlay Institute (HR consulting, 2009 to 2012), SL Benfica (sport psychologist, later sub-coordinator of the academy, 2014 to 2018), and Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar (Head of Psychology, 2018 to 2023). I currently teach as a guest lecturer on the postgraduate programme in Sport Psychology and on the joint Law and Management degree at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, and, from 2026, at Barça Innovation Hub as well. I work with clients in Portugal and internationally.

Professional philosophy

My work rests on three principles: prevention over reaction, sustainable performance over isolated peaks, and the conviction that a team's or organisation's culture shapes behaviour more than any speech does. This also means psychological safety and accountability are not opposites, they coexist, and my work is helping people and teams hold on to both at once.

Credentials and academic background

Master's in Psychology (ISPA, Lisbon), with a specialisation in Health Psychology from PUC-Rio and in Sport and High-Performance Psychology from Barça Universitas. Recognised Specialist in Sport Psychology and in Psychological Coaching by the Portuguese Psychologists' Association (OPP licence number 13204).
